Obituary for Carol Scheppner Hanes

Carol Helen Scheppner Hanes, age 90, of Harborcreek Township, and recently Pleasant Ridge Manor, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, September 17, 2017, at UPMC Hamot. She was born in Erie, PA, on November 19, 1926, daughter of the late Kenneth and Dorothy DuMond Scheppner.

Carol attended St. Ann Catholic grade school and East High School. She worked at several places over the years, including General Electric (where she met her husband), the Boston Store, the family ‘beer place’ and most important, selflessly raising ten children, all the while keeping and sharing her wonderful sense of humor.

Carol’s interests were many and varied. She enjoyed dancing with her husband, gardening, especially her roses, watching old movies and musicals, Dean Martin, baking delicious cookies, playing cards and games, Jeopardy!, puzzles, reading, crafting, the beach, holding babies, her late dog Tiffany and being a grandma and great-grandma, just to name a few.

Carol is survived by her husband of 67 years, Harold H. Hanes, and their ten children, Carol (Dan) Kensill, David (Lori) Hanes, Bob (Carol) Hanes, Peg (Rick) Hardesty, Vonnie (Dave) Lorah, Gary (Diane) Hanes, Dan (Christine) Hanes, Barbara Hanes, Jackie (Ernie) Matson, and Christopher Hanes. She is also survived by 31 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. She was proud of all her grandchildren but particularly honored by several who serve our nation, including three grandsons who have served a combined 16 tours in the Middle East, two of whom are currently serving in Afghanistan and Iraq. Also surviving are siblings Betty Grant, Sally Scheppner Carruba, and Tom (Jannette) Scheppner, and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the wonderful and dedicated staff at Pleasant Ridge Manor who cared for Carol the past few years, and the caring and compassionate staff at UPMC Hamot who helped make her transition peaceful.

Friends may call at the Dusckas-Taylor Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 5151 Buffalo Road (at Hannon Rd. in Harborcreek Twp.) on Wednesday from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm and are invited to attend a Funeral Service there on Thursday at 11 am. Interment will follow at Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be designated to Shriners Hospital for Children, 1645 West 8th Street, Erie, PA 16505.
