Obituary for John C. Ostroski

Captain John “Bob” Ostroski, Dad or Papa as we know him, age 90, was born 23 July 1927 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania to Peter and Julia Ostroski. He went to be with the Lord on 24 September 2017.

Upon graduation from G.A.R Memorial High School, Captain Ostroski embarked on a lifelong sailing career. Beginning with service in the US Navy during WWII and several years as a Deep-Sea merchant mariner, Captain Ostroski moved briefly to the Buffalo, New York area, then Erie, Pennsylvania to continue his sailing career on The Great Lakes. After a nearly five-decade career with Erie Sand & Steamship Co on the Motor Vessels Scobell, Lakewood and St. John, Captain Ostroski finally fully retired. Many of his years at Erie Sand & Steamship were as Captain on the MV Lakewood and MV St. John.

After retirement, Dad enjoyed playing billiards, gardening (tomatoes rule!), feeding the wildlife (the birds and squirrels loved him) and watching sports, especially football. He never did win the Times News football pool, though he was close a number of times- darn upset games!
Besides his parents, Dad was preceded in death by his daughter Sandra, grandson Aaron, and brothers Bernie & Larry.

Dad is survived by Elizabeth, his wife of 67 years, Daughter Donna Delp & her husband Chuck of Harborcreek, and sons John Ostroski of Erie and Rob Ostroski and wife Susan of Pleasanton CA.

No funeral services or visitation hours will be observed. Fittingly, burial will be at sea.
Thanks for the help and support of the staff at Erie Veteran’s Administration Medical Center as well as home hospice care givers Laura and Kelley.

For you Dad, a long and a short on the whistle. God needed a Captain in His navy; your new port of call. You will be sadly missed by all of us but you are in good hands now.
